Having gone though a number of line-up changes, Frozen Smoke is now stripped back once more to the bare essentials – Dan, computers, synths and his love for all things electronic, electro and eclectic. That’s not to say that Frozen Smoke has stopped collaborating – „Black Dog Rock“ features the menacing guitar work of long-time collaborator Stoo Grave and there are more on the way. Besides the remix work done for fellow Envloopers – Hillberg, Der Cube, Mightiness, Kooky and I-Cue, over the years Dan has also remixed and remodelled works for Ladytron, Zion Train, Chumbawamba, Mulu and The Mighty Quark.

Since Envloop began, we have come a long way, having built up the label as a haven for artists from around the globe and for electronic tunes from all different styles and genres. Artists such as TC Izlam, Soul Slinger, I-Cue, Kooky, Frozen Smoke, just to name a few…

Envloop stays true to it’s basic concept to be open not only to top artists, but also to encourage musical experiments. The 2000’s, so we were told, would only leave space for labels strictly specialized in their specific genres. We chose a different path: Tracks and artists from across the spectrum of genres, just as it was when electronic music imprints first started. The only standard across the label’s releases is the high quality.

The new collection, “One Year Envloop – The Bonus Mixes” gives you a retrospective in remixed form of our work so far. Plus, it presents new artists who have given Envloop so much loyal support.

A special contribution comes from Austrian painter Hans Biwi Lechner (www.getstoned.cc), who designed our artwork on “One Year Envloop”: The original painting shown on the release’s artwork will be cut into 36 pieces and will then form the cover of a special series of CD’s.

On envloop 005 “Zulu Music 2011 EP” this true jewel of New Yorican Underground found it´s way into the present decade, given a treatment by it´s creator Soul Slinger and Austrian artist Hillberg. What had been anticipating “Dubstep” decades before this genre was born, now comes along as a trippy Hip Hop tune reminiscent of the sound of Stereo MC´s or Gary Clail.

As a matter of course, Envloop´s New York artists I-Cue and Odyssey were invited to contribute their remixes, having been part of DJ Soul Slinger´s “Jungle Sky” and “Liquid Sky” family in the 90’s. I-Cue comes up with a hipsteppin‘ Drum & Bass remix building an audible bridge across the decades. Odyssey then joins with his brother I-Cue and follows up with a pumping Kraftwerky Soul Sonic Electrofunk interpretation of the song.

Soul Slinger´s 1996 Original completes the transatlantic sound-journey, before we hop over “the pond” to Liverpool, England, where Kooky joins in with a UK Electrohouse version in his own typical style. Bremen, Germany based artist Diffr3nt follows up with a pumping Techhouse version that will definitely not let you hold your feet still. And still the tune´s trip in it´s new 2011 shape has not ended: From the Northern German coastline it hops to Vienna, where the Austrian talents of Struboskop dress “Zulu Music 2011” in a funky House-robe.

Surviving on talent and desire, while ingeniously creating a unique experimental blend of Hip Hop / Drum and Bass music known as Hip Step (Hip-hop Influenced Productions Stimulating The Earth’s People), New York City based I-Cue is out to make more than just a little noise. A true innovator in a world of followers, I-Cue holds the title of Hip Step pioneer… one of the few in the world.
Member to New Yorks legendary Zulu Nation Crew around music legend Afrika Bambaattaa I-Cue has also shown a range of production styles with numerous acid jazz / hip hop releases dating back from 1994 to 1996 on a label called New Breed Records. This is the point in I-Cue’s career (and history) where the hip step genre began to develop – a subgenre of the new jungle hop / jump up genre. In 1996, I-Cue was signed to the infamous Liquid Sky Records.
Near the end of the millennium, I-Cue was the brainchild behind many hip step productions under the moniker “Mike & Ike”, as well as other releases of his own on the Liquid Sky / Jungle Sky record label, such as “On A Journey”, “Plutonic”, “Deja Vu”, “U Know My Steeze” (released under moniker Blunderground Massive), and the New York City hip step anthem “Next Level $#it” featuring T.R.A.C. in 2000.
Not only is I-Cue one of the most skillful turntable technicians in the US Drum and Bass scene, this native New Yorker has spun at the now legendary NASA and is presently a resident at Konkrete Jungle NYC.
